Understanding traditional knowledge systems, skills and practices through participatory action research and documentation.About our soach
92% of India's working population is part of the unorganized sector, with over 60% engaged in agriculture - indicative of widespread vulnerability to unemployment and poor economic security. Further, 65% of prime-aged women in rural India lack basic primary school education, affecting their and their children’s life chances.
SOACH, began with a simple idea of enthusing poorly literate indigent children with a joy for learning and the power of skills. A personal journey that began a decade back, formalized in 2011 as SOACH ‐ a charitable not‐for‐profit trust.
SOACH today, reaches out to not just indigent children but also disadvantaged women and youth, particularly from rural India, helping them develop the skills they need to fulfil their potential in school, the workplace and the wider society.
Finally, through participatory dialogues and discussions, SOACH works towards raising aspirations, achievements and life chances – with the aim of helping the dispossessed gain the confidence to imagine how their world can be different and gather the motivation to participate comprehensively and equitably with their immediate environment and the larger contemporary world.
In our journey to empower the less privileged, we have realized that there are many who share our concerns. Here, we share some of our experiences and observations, so that others may participate.
