EK SAMAAJ KI SAMAZ

EK SAMAAJ KI SAMAZ attempts to find ways of uncovering knowledge that stem from the actual lived experiences and experimentations of the ordinary people.

It is based on the understanding that popular and alternative knowledge systems that stem from a centuries old struggle with day-to-day living are as valuable as the decidedly abstract and reflective theorization of professional experts.

It also recognizes that knowledge is power and while it’s function is to be empowering & transformative, it can often become a tool of oppression and isolation if left in the hands of an elite few.

EK SAMAAJ KI SAMAZ studies and documents indigenous communities, their ways of living and their knowledge systems:
  • Regional & Folk
  • Art, Dance, Music & Theatre
  • Literature, Poetry & Songs
  • Crafts & Traditional Technologies
  • Indigenous Communities and their Social Practices
  • Traditional Agricultural Knowledge
  • Classical & Folk Healthcare Systems
  • Culinary Arts & Practices

While we all take pride in our heritage and fine craft, the real patronage for the traditional artisans is very limited and most of them are struggling for survival.

SOACH recognizes not just the expert skill sets of traditional artisans but also the deep knowledge base they carry – insights and wisdom built over generations of fine crafting.

SOACH thus connects with these master artisans at two levels –first, by up-skilling them through design development support that connects to contemporary market demands, and second, by documenting their craft and traditional knowledge of perceptive intelligence.
